Background
Ben Thrash originated the basic concept of the Charitable Society of Charleston in 1992. Ben shared his vision with several friends and from there a vision became a reality. CSC was incorporated on June 10, 1993, and achieved 501c3 status on August 20,1993.
The mission statement of the CSC sums up what we strive for as a charity organization. It reads,
"The Charitable Society of Charleston. Making a Difference. Our members are committed to providing for the needs of local not -for- profit organizations who help individuals in our community. Our members are particularly interested in organizations that serve children, the elderly, individuals with special needs, and community wellness."
A board of directors made up of 13 people governs the CSC. Board members pay dues, complete 6 service projects, chair a committee and remain an active leader and motivator of the organization.
Membership in the CSC is based on community service and commitment to serve the greater good of the CSC and its mission. A maximum of 71 members are voted on annually and are required to pay dues, complete 4 service projects, serve on a committee and be an active asset to the organization.
Over the years the CSC has compiled a substantial mailing list that includes more than 2000 individuals. The names on the mailing list receive invitations to the charity events, as well as updates on the volunteer service projects. These are the people who bring their friends to events and make our fundraisers successful. Through our mailing list, we reach a large part of the Charleston community.
To date, the CSC has donated over $446,706 to local charities. Each event we hold increases that amount and allows us to make a donation to a local charity in need. Finally, the ongoing volunteer service projects that we have adopted truly give us the sense of having served our community.
In addition, the Charitable Society of Charleston created an endowment fund at Coastal Community Foundation (CCF) to provide for the long-term stability of our agency. The CSC endowment fund reached $100.00 milestone in 2005 and is still growing! Each year we use the interest off of the account to provide grants to local charities.
