Making a Difference!

Our members are committed to providing for the needs of local not-for-profit organizations who help individuals in our community. Our members are particularly interested in organizations that focus on serving children, the elderly, individuals with special needs, and promoting overallcommunity wellness.

Our Beginning

The concept for the Charitable Society of Charleston (CSC) was developed by Ben Thrash in 1992. Ben Shared his vision with several friends, and together they worked to make that vision a reality. CSC was incorporated on June 10, 1993 and achieved 501(c)3 status on August 20, 1993.

Our Organization

A board of directors, made up of 13 volunteers, governs the Charitable Society of Charleston. Membership in CSC is based on community service and a commitment to serving the greater good of the organization and its mission. A maximum of 71 members can be a part of the society and are voted on annually.

Our Impact

Proceeds from our events allow us to make donations to local organizations in need. As of January 2015, the CSC has donated over one million dollars to various charities in the greater Charleston area. Our ongoing weekly volunteer service projects provide an unmatched opportunity to make an impact in the local community.

Our Endowment

CSC has created an endowment fund at Coastal Community Foundation to provide for the long-term stability of our organization. The CSC endowment fund reached $100,000 milestone in 2005 and is still growing! Each year we use the interest off of the account to provide grants to local charities.

Our Beneficiaries

We hold several events each year to benefit a variety of local non-profits in the Lowcountry that fit our mission. We are always accepting applications for consideration. Some of the largest events that benefit nonprofits include the annual Reindeer Run and the Oyster Roast. Past beneficiaries have included MUSC Children's Hospital, The Disabilities Foundation of Charleston County, The Ronald McDonald House, East Cooper Community Outreach, and Carolina Autism.

Typically held in the winter shortly after the New Year and open to the public, the Charitable Society Oyster Roast benefits a different organization each year. Attendance is often in excess of 500 people and most organizations receive several thousand dollars in donations. Recent beneficiaries of the event include local charities like the Green Heart Project, WINGS for Kids, and Louie's Kids.
